How PPWR Impacts the Future of Your Beverage Packaging
The European Union's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) aims to ensure that all packaging is reusable or recyclable by 2030. This regulation outlines several key requirements that will shape the future of packaging:
- Maintenance of packaging records.
- Clear recycling labelling, marking, and information.
- Reduction of over-packaging.
- Design for recyclability.
- Promotion of reusable packaging options.
Adopted by the European Parliament in December 2024, it is expected the regulation will be published in early 2025, coming into force in 2026. This legislation affects packaged drinks sold in the European market, including imported beverages.
By 2030, all packaging must achieve recyclability grades A, B, or C, with grade C being phased out by 2038. The grading system is based on weight: grade A indicates over 95% recyclability, grade B requires 85% or more, and grade C encompasses recyclability of more than 70%.
Additionally, the PPWR includes provisions regarding food contact materials, imposing restrictions on packaging containing per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) above specified thresholds, along with rules aimed at minimizing these substances of concern.
The good news for beverage producers and brand owners is that packaging formats such as glass bottles with metal closures already meet the stringent recyclability requirements (grade A) for sale in the EU. As you prepare for the future, it’s essential to consider including clear recycling information on your labels.
By sticking with glass bottles and crown caps, you’ll be positioning your drink packaging for compliance and sustainability through 2038 and beyond.
